WHERE do you get your ideas?

Trite as it sounds everything is a potential idea. All I do is look at the world around and ask the simple question, what if? That leads to the question, what happens next, etc.

DO you outline?

I used to and I find it helpful when creating new characters. But if you know your characters well enough and they are defined by lots of stories or books (e.g. Spenser, S. Holmes) then you have a pretty good idea how they are going to react. Then you start asking the questions I mentioned above.

WHO are your literary heroes?

Robert B. Parker, Stephen J. Cannell, Raymond Chandler, Dashiell Hammett and the rest of the usual suspects.

YOUR favorite book?

Ceremony by Robert B. Parker and its sequel, Taming a Sea Horse.

WHAT advice would you give to aspiring writers?

First, buy all of my books and read them cover to cover. (laughs) That's a joke. But read what you like to write and then write.

WHAT is the next book you're working on?

I'm between books for the moment but will mention it here first when I start it.

WHAT inspires you?

Fast moving books with heroes or heroines. Good writing is good writing whether it is TV, movies or radio, books or newspapers.
